What is a TENS Machine (Unit)?

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation

A TENS Machine is a form of non-medical pain relief that can be used in labor. It is a small battery-operated device that fits in the palm of your hand. It is worn around the neck and controlled by the laboring person. It has two lead wires that attach to four electrode pads placed on your back. These send electrical pulses to the spinal cord and brain. This essentially interrupts the pain signal from contractions and signals the production of endorphins, our body's natural narcotic. The pulsing sensation feels similar to "pins and needles" a tingling, buzzing feeling.

Here’s how it helps

  • Changes your perception of pain

  • Creates distraction

  • Decreases anxiety by creating a sense of control

  • "Gate control theory"

At a low setting the brain is flooded with the sensation from the TENS Unit and thus can't process pain associated with labor to the same degree.

  • "Diffuse Noxious Inhibitory Control"

At a high setting this creates a different "pain" sensation signaling the body to release endorphins.
